How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies
There are two major categories of dental emergencies that patients may experience over the course of their lives. One occurs because of lackluster oral hygiene – severe oral infections that result in severe pain, excessive sensitivity, and possibly the need for extraction. Additionally, sudden physical injuries and traumatic accidents can leave teeth fractured, dislodged, and even removed from the mouth entirely. Here are some helpful tips for how to handle these dire situations before you’re able to reach our office in-person:
In rare cases, toothaches may be caused by a piece of food or foreign debris that’s become lodged against the teeth and gum tissue. To rule out this possibility, start by flossing and rinsing the mouth thoroughly. If the discomfort persists, contact our Buckhead practice. While it is safe to take painkillers in the interim, do not touch them directly to any oral surfaces to avoid burning.
Chipped / Broken Teeth
If any large pieces of the tooth have come loose, gather them and plan to bring them with you to our office. Rinse the mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the cheek or lips above the broken tooth. This will help reduce overall pain and facial swelling that may occur.
If you are hoping to have the dislodged tooth successfully replanted, time is truly of the essence – contact Cosmetic Dentistry of Atlanta immediately! If at all possible, gently place the tooth back into its original socket and hold it in place with the tongue. Alternatively, carry it in a container of milk – the idea is to keep the structure moist. If reimplantation is not possible, Dr. Gaylor can help you explore outstanding tooth replacement solutions like dental implants.
Lost Filling / Crown
While lost dental restorations are typically not considered true emergencies, they can be noticeably uncomfortable because the tooth’s treated structure is newly sensitive to temperature and pressure. It may be possible to slip the crown back into place with the help of some dental “cement” or denture adhesive – both of these products are available at most pharmacies. Please contact our office to schedule an appointment.
How to Prevent Emergencies
While it will never be possible to avoid dental emergencies with perfect confidence, there are effective ways to significantly reduce your overall risk in day-to-day life. Here are some helpful tips:
- Maintaining a strong oral hygiene routine will keep your teeth strong and your mouth safe. Brushing and flossing daily is absolutely essential!
- Attend professional checkups and cleanings with the Cosmetic Dentistry of Atlanta team at least twice each calendar year. Dr. Gaylor can discover concerning signs of damage and infection in their earliest stages and prevent them from becoming true emergencies in the future.
- Exercise caution when eating foods that are overly tough, chewy, or sticky.
- Use the proper tools (like scissors) when opening difficult packaging. Do not resort to tearing materials with your teeth.
Cost of Treating Emergencies
Some dental emergencies can be treated simply with a prescription, while others will require extensive reconstruction and cosmetic care to restore the smile’s original confidence. Dr. Gaylor will review every component of her proposed care approach (including price) with patients before any treatment begins, providing respectful clarity and personalized guidance. We can file insurance claims as a courtesy and help you arrange affordable financing as well.
